Choosing the Best DUI/DWI Attorney

A DUI charge is obviously very serious. While it is often a misdemeanor, their are many other implications for life, work, family etc. that one must consider. In some cases, the charge may be a felony. In either case, one should consider hiring a DUI Attorney that specializes in DUI defense.

How to Choose:
First of all, remember that your innocent until proven guilty. Despite that standard, you should never consider representing yourself in a DUI/DWI case. Choose a good lawyer who specializes in DUI defense. Or, at the very least, get a public defender if you qualify.

1. Does the lawyer devote a significant amount of time to DUI/DWI cases?
If you choose an attorney that only rarely does DUI defense, they may not be aware of rapidly changing laws and precedent. Ask any prospective attorney how much of their time is spent practicing DUI work. A good DUI attorney will also be able to provide you with resources on how to get your life back together after a conviction -insurance, DMV, counseling etc.

2. How much do they charge?
It is always worth your time to talk to a few different DUI attorneys and compare their rates. However, be careful about simply choosing the lowest price. You are going to pay a significant amount of money to hire any lawyer so choose one that is experienced and will defend your DUI charge competently. If you expect to beat your DUI charge, a good lawyer is critical.

3. Don't waste time.
There are many questions a good DUI attorney will have to address in your defense. Don't procrastinate on identifying your lawyer (even if its a public defender). The prosecution has several advantages and your attorney will need to begin aggressively reviewing evidence that might be in your interest. Were you stopped legally? Were you informed of all your rights with regard to breath and other sobriety tests? Were all tests performed to the applicable standards etc?
